About this memory
Work undertaken by Lothian Water and Drainage Department to construct a 300-metre tunnel under central Edinburgh.
Work was carried out in 12-hour shifts, 6 days per week. The conditions were very cramped. The tunnel progressed by blasting, and drilling by hand. Then it was lined with panels and cemented. As the cement dried conditions would become very hot.
Work was completed in early 1992 - the ground above was to be developed as part of Edinburgh's new financial district.
