About this memory

1964 – although there was only around 25 people on the first night it grew very quickly and soon we were playing to Full Houses with a fair percentage of Broughton pupils making up the numbers which I reckon would be around 200 people rammed full with sweat dripping of the walls crammed into a tiny hall, we would do two and half hours sets every Saturday night.

It was on the second floor of the above terraced Georgian building in Waterloo Place which was managed by a guy called Bill Naylor who owned a couple of German Shepherd dogs which sat beside him at a table at the entrance where the audience paid.

We used to rehearse in Rutherford’s Bar situated at the top of Leith Street. The pub was managed by Jim’s dad and he allowed us access to a disused Snooker Hall on the top floor. The bar was frequented by a very “colourful” range of customers.

One such customer was Bill who ran The Aabano Club a small Jazz Club. He was looking to move from Traditional Jazz acts into the “New” Blues and Rock & Roll Music and asked if we would be interested in doing a show every week.

We did an astute deal with Bill saying we would do this for a split of the door’s takings.

Raymond – The first couple of weeks there was only a few punters so no big money maker but we were glad to be playing. About the 4th week of playing there I remember walking to the Aabano and the queue for the club formed from the entrance along Waterloo Place and continued someway down Leith Street.
