1964 – My Father’s 5 Barber’s photographed in the Doorway of his West Port Shop.

About this memory
From left to right Jimmy Chapman (who was the Shop Manager) Duncan Wright, Michael Donnelly, Ryszard Wozniak (he and I were Apprentices together) and Charlie Mearns.
In the West Port every Hairdresser had 6 Open Razors for shaving. Robin had to keep all 36 Razors sharp. Shaving in the West Port stopped almost overnight when the Stainless Steel Blade came in, which was Wilkinsons Sword Edge or Gillette.
We were trying to get Guys to change from the scoop over (which was a very low parting with a lot of hair on the top). Gregor Fisher’s Advert in the phone was the best thing that ever happened to Barbers. It convinced Customers to move their parting and cut it short on top.
Our Fathers West Port Barbers was famous for the Tony Curtis (American Film Star) and Perry Como (American Singer) Hairstyles and Neck Shaves.
