305 – 1966 – McGooS

About this memory
On the High Street, previously The Palace Cinema but converted into a multi level Dance Hall and Club. McGooS attracted many big names Cream, Small Faces, Chris Farlowe, Jimmy James and The Vagabonds and The Who one of the Sixties most unique and exciting Bands. We were excited to be asked to be the Support Band for The Who Show.
On the night however The Who were very late so we started the Show around 8.00 and just kept going for a couple of hours finishing with our version of Can’t Explain.
We came off Stage to find The Who getting ready to come on with Keith Moon commenting “nice version guys”. While the Roadies changed all the Gear around we were able to have a quick chat although we all seemed surprised how small they were.
They went on Stage to an enormous cheer and sounded fantastic, although the Vocals were hard to hear.
The Who lived with a reputation for smashing their Gear on Stage and that night they did not disappoint. Townsend annoyed as he failed to completely destroy his Guitar, Moon kicking Drums over and Daltrey swinging Microphones over his head. Entwistle serenely and expertly coasting through the whole Show.
I watched the Act at the front of the Stage and couple of people came up to me concerned that Pete was smashing my Guitar, which was very similar to one he was knocking 3 bells out of on Stage. I was pleased to assure them mine was safely tucked up in its case at the back of the Stage. All in all it was a wonderful and unforgettable experience.
