Deir al Balah is today a Palestinian city in the Gaza Strip: El Qantara is an Egyptian city on the Suez Canal.
The 7th Battalion of the Royal Scots formed part of the 156th Infantry Brigade, 52nd (Lowland) Division.
This photograph was taken by Malcom Smith (1887 – 1963) born in Kirk Street, Leith, and son of Sir Malcolm Smith, Provost of Leith from 1908 – 1917.
