Broomhouse Estate during construction in 1949

Broomhouse Estate during construction in 1949

About this memory

Left hand side of picture is facing south.
The road from left to right at the foot of picture is Saughton Rd, coming down from Longstone Rd / Calder Rd junction leading into Carricknowe.
The white roofs you see together are the “guvvies”, (Government buildings).
The road on the right hand side of the Government buildings is Broomhouse Drive, the road on left hand side is Broomhouse Terrace.
At the far edge of the estate is Broomhouse Road lined by a few trees.
The large swathe between the estate and the Industrial estate is the site of the Recreation ground and “The Pitches”, the Health Centre and the Fire station.

Bankhead Avenue runs between this and the Industrial Estate where Ethicon, Burtons etc. would be constructed.

Bottom left is the site of Saughton House and its grounds and Shaws Farm.
Just out of sight on the left hand side is the old Calder Road
Thanks to Keith Ormond for the photo.
