In novel “The Miller of Deanhaugh” an extract describes the Lade as shown above as follows “…the water course for supplying the Mills, which runs through the centre of the village. It is a startling site… to see a run of water five feet in depth, and about the same in breadth, careering past and close to a long line of dwelling-houses the only approach to which is by flag-stones laid across the stream, otherwise uncovered throughout its length.”
