About this memory

1906 – My mother Ann Isabella Grant was born in London on the 6th August 1903.

There’s a possibility that the above photo was taken in Australia because her parents immigrated there when she was a toddler.

Her Father’s name was William Lindsay Grant and her Mother’s name was Barbara Grant ( nee Elliot ).

My Mother’s siblings were William Lindsay at the back, Elspeth Elliot in front of him, my mum Ann sitting on her father’s knee would have been 3 years old, and Barbara is sitting on her mother’s knee.

Her father died in Australia when Ann was 4 year’s old.

Her mother brought the children back to Scotland where she unfortunately died. My mother then, was only 6 years old.

She was brought up at the Bridge of Weir Orphanage, in Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire, in what was known as the “Quarrier Homes”. Mum didn’t talk about the orphanage much as it wasn’t at that time a very nice place to be brought up in the early 1900’s. I don’t even know how old she was when she left there.
