About this memory
Wester Hailes 1961
In the mid-1960s, the local authority in Edinburgh looked to meet the demand for rented housing by building on large sites at high densities. One of the solutions arrived at was to acquire 287 acres of land at Wester Hailes. The land was in the Green Belt and a number of groups opposed the proposals. However, following an inquiry, the development was approved by the Secretary of State, Willie Ross. The 45 acre Wester Hailes Farm was bought by the local authority for £149,000, an increase of over £140,000 from its 1954 value.
