Health and Welfare in the 1950s

Health and Welfare in the 1950s

About this memory

Prior to the formation of the NHS in 1948,Health Care was in the hands of individual Doctors and Dentists who charged for their services.
Local Doctors included Dr McLeod, who had a house on the main Calder Road, and the Doctors Macdermaid who lived in the big house opposite the Esso garage on the same Road.

Dr Alan and Dr Margaret lived there with their five Children.

When the Health Centre opened they, along with Dr Margaret’s brother Dr Burnett, moved their surgeries into it.
