It Is Your Turn To Sweep And Wash The Common Stairs 1970s

It Is Your Turn To Sweep And Wash The Common Stairs 1970s

About this memory

This notice does not specify but it most commonly referred to the common close and stairs. Tenement stair cleaning was a responsibility taken in turn by each household within the tenement. Once swept and washed, the card was passed on to the next in turn, usually by hanging the notice on the next-in-line’s front door knob.

[For reverse of card, see 0518-002]

Does anyone know the period of when this notice was used? I remember it still being passed around in the late 1980s.
