About this memory

The Third Battle of Gaza took place on the night of the 1st November 1917 as part of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign. The above team suffered severely at Nebi Samwil (present-day village in the West Bank) on the 24th November 1917.

The 7th Battalion of the Royal Scots formed part of the 156th Infantry Brigade, 52nd (Lowland) Division.

This photograph was taken by Malcom Smith (1887 – 1963) born in Kirk Street, Leith, and son of Sir Malcolm Smith, Provost of Leith from 1908 – 1917.
