About this memory

“Plots and secret missions, messages only to be revealed at certain times. The picture tells all – in the ‘ops’ room, no doubt top brass.. ..invasion on the horizon. My father (Leading Officer Steward Ernest Mobbs) served under many well known captains and top brass, including Mountbatten, and Philip, the Queen’s husband.

“Mountbatten was well known for Burma. My father must have had a furlough as he bought me a moonstone necklace, handmade from Rangoon. Some gifts were passed on to others coming nearer home. I loved the letters Mum used to receive (censored), some of the stamps were beautiful.

“Another time [my father] trusted a parcel with someone for my birthday – I did not get it.” – Evelyn Muir (née Mobbs)

Photograph from collection of Ernest Mobbs who served in both World Wars.
