This pair of tram cable wheels date from 1898 and were part of a underground cable-winding mechanism. They were discovered in August 2021 during excavations at the Pilrig Street junction during the Trams extension work to take the tram line through Leith and to Newhaven.

The site was known as the ‘Pilrig Muddle’ when people travelling from Leith on electric trams would have to get off and switch to the Edinburgh cable-pulled system – and vice versa. After Leith became part of Edinburgh in 1920, the systems were unified, with Edinburgh changing to electric.
