Portrait Sailor United States Navy 1914-18

About this memory

“My uncle Jim Maley was a ‘gob’ (sailor) in the American Navy during the First World War..

“..when he was on board a battleship anchored in Brooklyn Navy Dockyard, pulled out his hankie along with his roll of dollars, out of his small tunic pocket, and his money landed in the water. He dived overboard and managed to retrieve his roll of dollars, but he was put in cells for deserting his ship.” – John Maley
