About this memory
John Thomson (third left).
John underwent training with the fire brigade when an employee at Scottish & Newcastle Breweries (joined for six months, stayed thirty years!).
The training involved learning how to use breathing apparatus and to rescue anybody trapped or passed out through excessive carbon dioxide levels within enclosed spaces (leaks could sometimes occur from fractured vents in the fermentation vessels).
