Studio Portrait Young Dancer c.1934

Studio Portrait Young Dancer c.1934

About this memory

Bessie Walker (later Allan), aged about fourteen.

Bessie was part of a group called the ‘Artistic Concert Party’ which was comprised of various dancing groups (ballet, tap, highland, etc). Bessie’s group held many voluntary concerts to raise funds for Leith Hospital – in the 1930s there was no NHS and it was a case of the poor helping the poor.

In this picture Bessie is wearing her tap shoes and costume, which consisted of a white satin skirt and white short-sleeved blouse.

Photography – Jerome’s Studio.
