“The picture shows how formidable the giant steel vessels were. Typical of those days were four funnels, goodness knows what the tonnage was, and coal consumption. The ship lived up to its name.

“Hard to know if father [Ernest Mobbs] was on it, as sometimes crews were transferred out at sea. He had more than likely been waiting to board [the German ship] as many of the crew are on deck.

“The ship’s captain had been ousted of his command not long after the picture was taken, rest of crew [taken] as prisoners. Great courtesy was exchanged by commanders of both sides.” – Evelyn Muir (née Mobbs)
