The Guardian of Plot 17

June 2025
The Guardian of Plot 17

About this memory

Nestled between rows of beans and beetroot sits this tiny clay gnome — a homemade guardian watching over the plot. He’s no more than a few inches tall, sculpted with care and tucked in the soil like he belongs there. It’s a silly touch, perhaps, but also a joyful one.

This image reminds me that gardening isn’t only about food or function. It’s also about fun, creativity, and play. In this allotment, Tim and Rob aren’t just growing vegetables — they’re building a world of their own, one where even a small, slightly lopsided gnome has a purpose. It made me smile, and I think that’s exactly what this space is meant to do.
