The original Murray Burn Culvert under the Union Canal.

2016
The original Murray Burn Culvert under the Union Canal.

About this memory

I lived at 52 Calder Crescent on the Calders Prefab Estate.
My house backed onto a field through which ran the Murray Burn.
The Burn entered the field via a culvert under the Union Canal, which ran atop high sided banking above the field.
Children were usually banned from playing near the Canal as it was considered dangerous.
However this was never a deterrent and hours were spent fishing for tadpoles etc.
In those days the Burn was open all the way until entering the Water of Leith.
The Culvert is situated about 300 yards south from the old Canal bridge ,which was then part of the old Calder Road and was the City border.
