The Swing Park at the foot of Parkhead Gardens in the 1950s.

About this memory

Situated at the foot of Parkhead Gardens between Parkhead Drive and Parkhead Crescent.
Thanks to Stuart Leadbetter for the photo.

Play areas were scarce and these swing parks were the only provided entertainment.

There were three on the Prefab Estate, one on Calder Broadway and two on Calder Crossway alongside the respective shops.

There was another opposite the Wooden Houses at Wester Hailes.

Playing in the streets involved football, skipping, roller skates, cricket in summer,”peevers”,marbles and bikes.
This was only possible due to the small volume of traffic in those days.
