1952 – The white advert going from left to right on the shelf is for Solidox Toothpaste produced in 1939 by a company called Lilleborg in Norway. The advert says “I’m glad I changed to Solidox”. To the right of that is an advert for Silvikrin Hair Cream, similar to Brylcream, there was always debate about which was best, I seem to remember Brylcream was always considered the best for holding the hair in place. All the white jars are Silvikrin, the Brylcream must have been on a different shelf along with Trugel which was another similar hair product that unlike creams was a gel that kept the hair in place more firmly.

The combs were for sale.

The bottles in front of the mirror would be various hair tonics for sale, can’t make out the names, sorry.

The above right display cabinet from the top is Macleans Toothpaste and below is Baylshave shaving cream all for sale.

The “Look Ahead Poster” is a promotional poster to encourage customers to visit and re-visit Bobs.

In those days men tended to buy a lot of products at the barbers, shaving cream, Blue Gillette Razor blades, Bay Rum a type of aftershave still available today, hair tonics, hair creams, combs and of course the under the counter product Durex. This was all before Poundland, Semichem etc., which stopped a lot of aftersales as barbers couldn’t compete on price.
