“The young girl is Mary Jane Allan, born 1881, with her parents William Allan, who was a wright (joiner) and Jane Allan (née Annat).
“Mary Jane was the youngest of their seven children, their ‘late baby’, born nineteen years after her eldest brother.
“In his spare time William made violins and taught his children to play, all of them except Mary Jane the youngest. Perhaps his fingers were too arthritic by then!” – Evelyn Whitfield
