About this memory

Willie Merriless (centre) with husband and wife stars Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

“On this visit to Edinburgh Roy Rogers and Dales Evans visited Dunforth Church of Scotland Children’s Home, which was in Park Road, where Willie Merriliees lived. He was a great friend and supporter of the children’s home.

“A little girl called Marion, who lived in the home, sang a song for them – ‘Won’t You Buy My Pretty Flowers?’ – which moved Dale Evans to tears. [Roy and Dale] adopted Marion and took her to America, where she grew up and married.

“She kept in touch with Willie Merrilees and when he was featured on [the television show] ‘This Is Your Life’ in the sixties she was flown over to see him.” – Merril Whalen [2003]
