“There was an alleyway between gate and wall where we played. My father owned a tyre shop on the London Road in Mitcham. We lived above it in the flat, and used the downstairs kitchen. My mother worked in the shop and nearly always wore the dungarees with her hair tied up in a scarf.” – Marian Thom (née Payne)
