“This was taken when I left home for a live-in job so [as] to be independent. I wanted to join the forces but could not get parents’ permission as I had to be twenty-one years otherwise. I was not at the job very long before I was asked if I would be supervisor.

“This was only my third job in trying to be independent from family, especially mother, and disagreements between her and father at home. I took on the responsibility [of] being in charge of people who were much older [than me].” – Evelyn Muir (née Mobbs
