page 5, 6, – MOVING IN TO MY NEW HOME IN DEAN VILLAGE

May 2022

I’m in! I was called to the lawyers office to receive a massive bundle of keys and padlocks. There is a deadfall front door key the size of a soup spoon as well as a Yale door lock.
Sounds secure to me.
Mother and Father drove from the Potteries to have a look at my home in what they regarded as “working class slums”. Apart from this, they behaved very well. They were both horrified at my proposal to scrap the tiny kitchen and to turn into a shower room. As they had brought from the Potteries half a tea service and half a dinner service in a rather nice underglaze floral print, Mother took charge in the kitchen. I must admit that it looked quite an attractive little room with the pottery displayed on the shelves with a few pots and pans. The last owner took the gas stove, but a replacement is easily fitted (or so the gas board say). Mother discovered a small table that folds out of the kitchen wall. Breakfast for one.
Father, meanwhile lit the coal fire to test the “draught” of the chimney. There is still some coal, mostly slack and dust, in the wooden landing outside the backdoor. Must order some in for winter and put it under lock and key. My old bicycle padlock will do that; the lawyer’s big padlock is for the storage room in the cellar.
