The flat now needs a thorough clean up. For that an armful of brushes, mops buckets and floor cloths will be needed. As a now frequent attender at George street’s two auction rooms, I can state emphatically that these are not worth the auctioneer’s time. The big upper class ironmonger on George Street, Greys not only allowed me to open a monthly account with them, but offered me a month’s credit in advance. Jenner’s did exactly the same last New Year when I needed a winter overcoat.
I left the University’s Salisbury Green residence at two o’clock, having completed the most enormous ironing and packing. I have been in this good old residence too long. My helpful driver laboured with me to get all my stuff up to the third floor. I gave him a big tip for shedding so much sweat on a hot day. The taxi driver was a very decent chap and carefully loaded my two big suitcases, packing case, bags of laundry, bicycle and a sackful of text books. My new washing line came in very handy for this and the driver drove very carefully.
The Gas Board delivered a nice “new” second hand, gas cooker – yet another HP account, and I was feeling very proud to possess such a sensible and easy to clean appliance.
Unheralded, a lorry driver from Stoke suddenly appeared and announced that he had a load of furniture on his lorry down in the court yard.
