A Father Visiting His Evacuated Children In Portpatrick, July 1940

A Father Visiting His Evacuated Children In Portpatrick, July 1940

About this memory

David Hutchinson, with his children, Robert, David, and Gertie.

“Brother Robert and I were evacuated to Portpatrick in September 1939 and stayed until November 1940. David had gone with us but was sent back the following day, as he had Down’s syndrome and no one was prepared to take him.

“My parents visited every six weeks or so during that time, when a bus brought families of those evacuated. Father was a keen swimmer but I was reluctant to give up my rubber ring.” – Trudy Thomas (née Hutchinson) [2004]
