About this memory

Evelyn Whitfield (née Sime, right), neighbours Jim (White?) and Norma Suttie; Harry Sime (standing at back).

“I still have the doll, she had a china head and I called her Barbara. The scout uniform at that time included the large khaki felt ‘bush hat’ and a wooden pole. The marks at the top of the pole were rings burned into the wood. These could be used to estimate the height of a tree or a hill, by planting the pole into the ground, standing back a certain distance and viewing from a certain angle (using trigonometry I think!)” – Evelyn Whitfield
