About this memory

Margaret Hutchinson (fourth left).

“Margaret joined the Civil Service in London at the age of 18 as a shorthand typist. The office was evacuated to Harrogate at the beginning of the war. They went back to London until the heavy bombing later that year, and were sent north again.

“She was in the Ministry of Aircraft Production, which was a reserved occupation, but managed to get out before the end of the war. [She] joined the VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) and went to Australia to a naval hospital, nursing returned POWs.” – Trudy Thomas (née Hutchinson, sister of Margaret) [2004]
