About this memory

David and Nellie Houston (née Campbell) with their children (left to right) Mary Scott Campbell, Alec, David James Law.

“Taken about three years before my father was born. The two adults are my grandfather, David Houston (b. 8th May 1905) and grandmother, Nellie Houston (b. 25th March 1911).

“My grandfather went on to work with the electricity board during the war thus – apart from being a member of the air raid patrol – was excused national service. After retiring he enjoyed two passions – bowling, and model steam engine making (a self-taught engineering hobby).

“My grandmother left school at twelve to run the kitchen on a farm. She used to get up at four in the morning to light the fire. She worked till she married my grandfather, then spent all her time bringing up what was to become a family of five. At the age of forty-eight she decided to relaunch her employment and become a nurse. She also enjoyed making rhymes, often writing poems to celebrate family events.” – Eoin Houston
