Family Out For Walk “Braw Lads Day” July 1933
1933

About this memory
Alex and Annie Melrose and their son Robert, aged 16 months.
“This was probably one of the early ‘Braw Lads Days’ which started in the 1930s. All the other Border towns had their day: Selkirk Common Riding; Hawick Common Riding; also Lauder. So Galashiels made up one with incidents from past history and concluding at the 1914-18 war memorial.
A Braw Lad and Lass are picked each year and there are ride-outs (on horseback), balls, and many social events. They ride in all the other towns’ events including Musselburgh’s ‘Honest Lad'” – Robert Melrose
