'Grandfather Smith' In The Garden 1920s

About this memory

‘Grandfather Smith’ was coachman to the Wykeham-Martins family at Leeds Castle, Kent. He was one of a family of nine. His mother – a widow for 65 years – was governess to the children at Leeds Castle and lived on the estate until her death.

Each Christmas the Wykeham-Martins gave a party and the Smiths would receive a bolt of material and a new pair of boots.

Grandfather Smith is the great grandfather of Miles Tubb.
