20th November 1993
Meeting Muhammad Ali at Waterstones book signing

About this memory

4.49 pm – Muhammad Ali, Three time’s Heavyweight Champion of the World sits down at the table where the book-signing is about to commence.

I am only 3 feet away from the iconic Muhammad Ali the Greatest Heavyweight Boxer in the History of the Sport. Even although Muhammad Ali wasn’t well, I was still privileged to be watching and enjoying this magnificent spectacle, it was truly amazing, to be part of it.

In the background is a man wearing a white top. He is part of Ali’s entourage. The two women in red jacket’s are Waterstones Marketing & Promotional Staff.

Footnote : Born Cassius Marcellus Clay on the 17 January 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. As an 18 year old in 1964, Cassius Clay won for his Country an Olympic Gold Boxing Medal in Rome.

The big punching 22 year old, Cassius Clay changed his ” slave name ” to Muhammad Ali. Soon after that Ali put on the famous World Heavy Weight Championship Belt after destroying Sunny Liston in 1964.

At every opportunity the brash Ali told the Press and TV audience’s that ” He was the Greatest ” and proclaimed that he was the ” fastest and prettiest boxer ever to throw a punch “. Before fight’s true to his word, Ali allway’s said that he would ” Float like a Butterfly and Sting like a Bee “.

In the 1970s Ali’s name rang round the globe after a string of legendary fight’s with Joe Fraser, George Foreman, and Ken Norton, securing his place as the world’s most famous heavyweight boxer.
