“Whatever the status as seaman it was all hands on deck and man the guns. Even though the so called protection [was] worn beneath the tin hat, many lost their hearing. My eldest brother was unfortunate to have that happen and suffered severe shell shock, he was also unfortunate never to be paid anything for his injury which led to a lot of illness.” – Evelyn Muir (née Mobbs)
