About this memory

J Douglas Clayton, aged seven months.

“This is an early photo of my father, James Douglas Frederick Edwin Clayton. In later years, we would often see photographs of Dad in the local and sometimes the national newspapers as he sought to attract much-needed new industry to his home town. In the late 1950s as chairman of Irvine Town Council’s Industrial Development Sub-Committee, he spearheaded a drive to bring new factories to an area of high unemployment.

“As a teenager, I remember rushing home on several occasions to see Dad being interviewed on television about the various initiatives being taken to promote the town. His efforts were successful and in 1970 the Royal Burgh of Irvine acknowledged his contribution with the award of one of its highest honours, a Burgess Ticket.” – Norma-Ann Coleman (née Clayton)
