In December 1908 a Peterhead fishing vessel the SS Hope ran aground on the Holm of Faray, in Orkney, during a storm. The five men from Faray braved the storm in a rowing boat to rescue the crew. They each received a medal and other gifts from Edward VII on an invitation to Balmoral.
They were always referred to as the “Faray Heroes”.
