Two floors up, two adults and five children lived in a two roomed flat with no hot water other than what was boiled or heated on the open fire. We did, however, have an indoor toilet where in some other buildings, tenants shared an outside one with families on their landing. It was a matter of pride to keep the doors looking their best and brass letter boxes and nameplates were polished with Brasso and plenty elbowgrease.
