“The photo is of myself shortly after starting [my] first job from leaving school aged fourteen, taken at the back [of the shop] in the goods receiving area near the unpacking basement. The girl with me started a while later, her name was Gladys.
“The packing cases [were] packed with straw in heavy wooden crates. [In the basement] I used to be quite scared, when overnight some mice [would get] into the straw in the cases. It was quite dark down there and I had to grope about for the light switch, which gave me an electric shock!” – Evelyn Muir (née Mobbs)
