About this memory

Maria Pettigrew (née Scougall) – this is the earliest photograph of Maria, taken at Harlaw, Balerno.

Maria, who was 106 in 2000, worked at Harlaw Farm as a farmworker and housekeeper. Her first husband, Bill McArdle, died in 1923, and she brought up three children on her own.

    Interesting. My grandparents farmed at Harlan farm from 1930.s to the 1970.s aprox. They were John an d Margaret their oldest daughter Janet was my mother she married a farmer from liberton called Robert Jack in 1946

    Hello Ann, there are a couple more photos regarding Maria Pettigrew. If you type in 0019 into the keyword search box the other photos will come up. It looks like by 1935 Maria was employed as a housekeeper in Stockbridge.

    we lived at Harlaw Farm in the sixties
    Mrs Wood was the owner, she drove a wee mini van
    She sometimes rented the farm to Bobby Jack
    I loved the farm my playmates were the Yorkston family
    From Haddington wish i could meet them again
